Writing for the ear

A teleprompter script is not a document to read silently — it is a script to say out loud. Write the way you speak.

🗣️Phonetic spelling

Always spell difficult names or technical terms as they sound. Never trust that you will pronounce them correctly in the moment.

Bad«El archipiélago cerca de Albuquerque»
Good«El ARK-i-PEL-a-go cerca de AL-buh-ker-kee»
🔢Numbers as words

Convert all numbers to text. Digits are processed by a different part of the brain and cause hesitation.

Bad«Cuesta 1.200 € y pesa 5 kg»
Good«Cuesta mil doscientos euros y pesa cinco kilogramos»
🔤Abbreviations

Avoid them unless universally known (NASA, USA). Unusual acronyms create micro-pauses.

Bad«Contacta con el dpto. de RR.HH.»
Good«Contacta con el departamento de Recursos Humanos»
🌐Websites and URLs

Remove https:// and www. — they are not pronounced and distract the eye when reading.

Bad«Visita https://www.podcastvlc.es»
Good«Visita podcast-vlc-punto-es»

Structure and vertical flow

How the text appears on the glass directly affects your eye movement. A wide block forces you to read sideways — and the camera will catch it.

Bad structure — text block
Bienvenidos a nuestro video de capacitación. Hoy hablaremos sobre la importancia de la seguridad en el lugar de trabajo y cómo prevenir accidentes siguiendo los sencillos protocolos que hemos establecido.
Correct structure — vertical flow
Bienvenidos a nuestro video
de capacitación.— pausa — Hoy vamos a hablar
sobre la seguridad
en el lugar de trabajo.— pausa larga — Y cómo prevenir accidentes
siguiendo protocolos sencillos.
⏸️Rhythm control with blank space

The Neewer app scrolls at constant speed. Use line breaks to control timing:

Short pauseOne line break (Enter) → breathe
Long pauseTwo line breaks (Enter×2) → dramatic pause

Visual cues and navigation

Plain .txt format has no bold or italics. Use ASCII symbols to guide yourself during recording.

>>> NUEVO TEMA <<< Scene or topic change. Warns that something new is coming.
- - - - - - - - - Visual divider. Long pause or transition.
[SONRISA] Tone indicator. Place at the start of the line: [SERIOUS], [SLOW DOWN], [EMPHASIS].
((SEÑALAR GRÁFICO)) Action cue. Signals when to hold a product, point at something, or make a gesture.
PALABRA CLAVE ALL CAPS only for words needing strong emphasis. Don't overuse — it loses its effect.

File formats

The format you choose can ruin your perfectly written script. Here is the hierarchy:

⚠ Acceptable
.DOCX
Word Document
Neewer app supports it, but may contain hidden XML code. Keep formatting extremely simple.
✗ Avoid
.PDF
PDF
Fixed layout. Increasing font size makes text overflow the screen. Never use PDF for teleprompter.

Final checklist before recording

Review this list before saving the file and coming to the studio:

  • All numbers written as words (not digits)
  • Difficult names written phonetically
  • URLs without https:// or www.
  • Text in a narrow column, not a wide block
  • Pauses marked with extra line breaks
  • Emojis removed — replaced with [DESCRIPTION]
  • Straight quotes ("") not curly/smart quotes
  • Saved as .TXT with UTF-8 encoding
  • Read aloud once before coming to the studio
